Key Elements of Youth Development
A Safe, Positive EnvironmentClub staff, facilities and programs create stability, consistency, and a sense of physical and emotional safety for members. The Club provides structure and clearly defined acceptable behaviors.
 
FunMembers develop a strong sense of belonging through connections they establish with staff and peers. Staff members make the Club feel like home, fostering a family atmosphere and creating a sense of ownership for members.
 
Supportive RelationshipsChildren develop meaningful relationships with peers and adults. Staff members display warmth, caring, appreciation, acceptance and guidance in their interactions with members.
 
Opportunities and ExpectationsClub youth acquire physical, social, technological, artistic and life skills. The Club encourages members to develop a moral character while staff reinforce high expectations and help members with school and post-secondary education.
 
Recognition...The Club recognizes and supports young people’s self-worth and accomplishments. Staff members encourage youth and provide positive reinforcement as they make improvements and experience successes.
 
 
 
What makes our Club a special place for kids?
  • The Club is a neighborhood-based facility designed for youth programs and activities.
  • The Club is for all boys and girls regardless of race, religion or nationality.  All children are eligible for membership. Dues are kept low and no child is ever turned away. 
  • The Club is non-sectarian and has an open door policy.  The Club is open to all members during its regular hours of operation.
  • The Club is open every day after school and during the summer when kids have free time and need positive, productive outlets.
  • The Club provides a varied and diversified program utilizing nationally recognized educational and recreational curricula that have been field tested.
  • The Club has full-time and part-time trained youth development professionals, providing positive role models and mentors. Volunteers provide key supplementary support.    
  • The Club is guidance-oriented. It emphasizes values inherent in the relationships between youth and their peers and adult leaders. 
  • The Club provides an environment where youth are given acceptance and friendship that fosters a sense of belonging, usefulness, competence and influence.

  • The Club serves 600 youth annually through our after-school and summer programs under the supervision of full-time and part time youth development professionals?
  • The Club offers a summer youth work experience to 25 teens where they learn job readiness and employability skills?
  • Club member Naquasia Pinchback is the 2008 BGCA Northeast Regional Youth of the Year and serves as an Ambassador for Youth for over 4 million youth in Clubs?
  • The Club prepares youth for success by offering evidence-based programs such as Project Learn, SMART Moves and Triple Play: Mind, Body and Soul?
  • Hip-Hop Artist and Club Alumna Ashanti supports our performing arts program and is also a 2009 Inductee into the BGCA Hall of Fame?
  • The Club and Elegant Affairs provides a delicious Thanksgiving Dinner each year to 300 Glen Cove residents?
  • The Club supports members’ academic achievement by offering Power Hour homework help program each day with the help of caring volunteers?
